Rock pools

There is a private property on the southern coast of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. Using the tried and tested geography-by-anatomy method, it's on the ball of the foot, just towards the big toe. More specifically, it's called Hillock's Drive and it's at Butler's Beach. There's no need to write a marketing spiel about Hillock's Drive. They do a good job of that themselves here.

The rock pools at Butler's Beach are some of the best I have experienced. Sheltered from the waves of Investigator Strait, crystal clear, and full of life. Refreshed and refilled at high tide and at times of particularly large seas, they are tranquil, safe, and sheltered at low tide. They are perfectly intertidal.

If you want a truly stunning swimming experience, grab the local tide charts from an online service, speak to some locals, and hunt out a few spectacular rock pools for a dip. Time it right, and you can even get away with a skinnydip.

You'll need to pay to access Butler's Beach, but it's absolutely worth it.
